HitsvilleUK.com is the website that showcases the research and graphic design work of Dr Russ Bestley.
Russ’s research in to punk graphic design from 1976 to 1984 is visually represented on the site alongside Russ’s portfolio of punk graphic design work. If you are a graphic designer or interested in the punk era then this is a great resource and a site that is well worth a visit. A highlight is the punk singles matrix which is a visual timeline of all the punk singles released in the punk era.
Goodbye Mr McKenzie were fronted by Martin Metcalfe and were an interesting line up with Shirley Manson, who later found worldwide fame with Garbage, and ex Exploited guitarist John Duncan who later became Nirvana’s guitar tech. The full line up was Martin Metcalfe, Big John Duncan, Derek Kelly, Shirley Manson, Rona Scobie and Fin Wilson. Their debut album Good Deeds and Dirty Rags was released in 1989 and is regarded as a classic.
Roll forward to the present and Martin, Kelly and Fin are still together and producing music as The Filthy Tongues. Brilliant music too. There are two Filthy Tongues albums, Jacob’s Ladder and Back to Hell and I can’t recommend them highly enough. If you haven’t heard of the band then you should find the albums on Spotify and give them a listen.

This is a shoot that turned out way better than I expected. It was Autumn and I was inspired by an image I had seen on the Deviant Art website and decided it would be a good idea to get out in the New Forest and do an Autumn themed photo shoot.
This photoshoot featuring Marieke who is a friend of Loo's took place in the same old Re:So shop location as the shoot for Blaise and Scarlet Soho. Huge thanks to Andy Wilkin for the behind the scenes video.
Blaise was doing a lot of work with me as a make up artist for some music video and photography shoots and asked if myself and long time collaborator Louise Morrell could do a shoot for her as well. Of course we did!
The photoshoot for a new line of t-shirts aimed at the surfing community was the brief for a shoot and where better to do that than on the beach on a sunny day. Trouble was by the time we got to the t-shirts being available we were in October.
This photoshoot for Scarlet Soho was during a very creative time with the band where I created three music promos for their single releases. The band were doing European tours fairly regularly and it was great to see some of the images from this shoot used in the the publicity material for those.
Now that I am all set up in the new studio it was great to get a collaboration going with electronic music producer and composer Natalia Data. I got talking to Natalia and asked her to send me some tracks. At the time I was thinking more about using the tracks for practice sessions.
A little while back a friend gifted me a book. It was such an apt gift for me as the book (details at the end) is all about setting up a home studio without using expensive gear. That has been my philosophy all the way (through necessity) and the good news is, I have been able to get some pretty decent results.
